Alice Jo Hendrix
I grew up an only child in Montgomery, Alabama and went to Catholic School. As far back as I can remember I have loved to draw and color. My cousin, my best friend and I used to compete for the best picture. Of course, our parents and grandparents were the judges and were careful to praise each of us the same. I love to write and always strived, and still do, for good penmanship. I am happiest when I am doing something in the artistic world, whether it’s arranging flowers, painting, fixing hair, decorating for parties or decorating home. I began working for the State of Alabama right after high school, married and raised three children. After being divorced for 2 and ½ years, I married my present husband. We were married in 1981 and have lived on Lake Martin since 1992. I retired from the State in 1994 and we purchased Lake Breeze Realty in 1995. We recently sold our interest in the company. In the meantime, I was chairman of the Christmas on the Coosa Boat Parade for three years. I helped my family decorate their boats and coordinated a rewards party for the parade participants after the parade. I was chairman of Wetumpka’s Relay for Life Survivor’s Reception for several years and enjoyed decorating for that event. I have prepared bouquets for friend’s weddings and made flower arrangements for my church. As chairman of the decorating committee at my church, I am able to do the thing I love for Christ. Never having much time for serious painting while I was working, I was definitely excited when retirement came along and I began fulfilling my lifelong dream. I painted with Norma Robbins, a former co-worker and a very good artist, when time permitted. After moving to Lake Martin, my painting took a back seat and I only painted occasionally. Then, I decided to take some formal lessons and enrolled in Doris Bell’s art classes in Wetumpka. She encouraged me to join the Elmore County Art Guild. Since then I have been active in the Guild and have been able to win a few awards in some of the shows for my oil paintings and also photography. I went to a five-day watercolor workshop at Towery Art Colony on Lake Martin; however, my true love is oil.One day a week, I paint with fellow artists which is about the only time I get to paint and I try not to let anything interfere with that time.
