Barbara Simpson
A self-taught artist, Barbara Simpson has been creating art for many years. She began seriously drawing and painting at the age of five, literally drawing or painting on every surface that was available every chance she got. For more than 13 years, she has been working and teaching at her studio and gallery in Millbrook, Alabama. Her work includes a variety of subjects and media, covering a multitude of moods and personalities. Although she shifts gears often, changing from one medium to another and going from one extreme to the other with her color palette, her style always comes through. Her work is predominantly acrylic or watercolor, but she also works with casein, oil, pastel, and charcoal. Her work also includes custom designed canvas floorcloths, wallhangings in silk and linen, painted furniture, murals and clay sculpture. Barbara’s work has been selected for such prestigious juried shows as the Energen Art Show in Birmingham, Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Annual Flora and Fauna Art Show, Eastern Shore Art Association’s Members Juried Show in Fairhope, and the Selma Art Guild’s members juried show. She has won numerous place and purchase awards, including a recent award of merit in the 2008 AWF Flora and Fauna Art Show. Barbara served as the Artist in Residence 2006, 2007, and 2008 for the Montgomery Arts Council at the Armory Learning Arts Center in Montgomery. Barbara is the co-founder and artist consultant for the Alabama Wildlife Federation Annual Flora and Fauna Art Show and the recipient of the 2006 Volunteer Award from AWF presented at the Governors Awards banquet. She teaches painting classes for Auburn University Montgomery through their continuing education program partnership with the City of Prattville. She is the teacher for the Artability program for mentally challenged adults at Smith Center in Prattville and has worked with Nancy Raia of Fairhope with the Very Special Arts program, working with artists with disabilities to raise funds for that program. She is a member and past President of Elmore County Art Guild, where she served as Chairman of its Annual Winter Show for many years. She is a member of the Prattauga Art Guild where she has served as Chairman of both the Annual Fall Art Show and the Youth Art Show and serves on the committee for Prattville’s Fountain City Arts Festival. Barbara is a member of the Montgomery Art Guild, Selma Art Guild, and a supporting artist member of the Eastern Shore Art Association. She recently became a member of the Board of SAC’s Gallery in Montgomery. In addition, she currently is serving on the committee for the 17 Springs Arts Festival sponsored by the Millbrook, Alabama, Chamber of Commerce, and was a consultant regarding the arts for the City of Millbrook City of Excellence program, preparing initial guidelines and proposal for arts programs for the City. She has attended the Sarah Towery Carlisle Artist Colony at Lake Martin for five years and has attended classes and workshops with Donnave Lindsey, Clark Walker, Sue Jensen, Cam Walker, and others.
