Butch Gantt

Butch Gantt is a 1969 graduate of Wetumpka High School. In the late 50s and early 60s his interest in art began when he started watching Jon Gnagy and his “learn to draw” television show. He got the Gnagy workbook and started testing his drawing skills.  Wetumpka has been blessed with many amateur artists over the years and Butch was influenced by his artist friend and neighbor Billy Moore.  In high school Butch was a student of Bobby Carr. Mr. Carr gave him the basics and much direction. That is the extent of his “training”.

In 1970 he graduated from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science. Over the years, he experimented a little with oil and watercolor until 1981 when he got involved with other hobbies and spent his spare time on the golf course. One of his old paintings hangs in his daughter’s home and it was admired by a close friend. At the bidding of his daughter, he consented to do a painting for the friend as a wedding gift in November of 2008. He then did a painting of Little Sam’s Café for Edgar Welden. The spark in art had returned and since then his interest and spare time has again returned to painting.
Butch is a former Montgomery police officer and detective and is a licensed mortician and funeral director.  For the past 30-plus years, Butch has been a railroad conductor with CSX Transportation.  He is looking forward to retiring and having more time for family, friends, fun and art.
